Early Screening for Children at Risk of Dyslexia

Decoding Dyslexia CA, made up of families who have dyslexic children, educators and others who are passionate about addressing dyslexia, strives to raise dyslexia awareness, empower families to support their children, and improve resources for students with dyslexia in California public schools.

Children at risk for reading failure can be reliably identified even before kindergarten by assessing their emergent literacy skills. Research shows that it takes four times longer to intervene in 4th grade than in late kindergarten.

With early identification and prevention programs, the number of children who are placed in special education programs can be reduced by up to 70%. It costs twice as much to serve a student in special education as compared with general education.
